"Scarlett Johansson (Lost in Translation, Girl with a Pearl Earring) brings a palpable sense of joy and exuberance to her performance of Lewis Carroll's enduring classic Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. From the White Rabbit and Mad Hatter to the Cheshire Cat and Queen of Hearts, she imbues each madcap character with a distinct voice and personality that will leave a lasting impression long after the adventure is over.
When Alice sees a white rabbit take a watch out of its waistcoat pocket she decides to follow it, and a sequence of most unusual events is set in motion"
Alice in Wonderland? Really? Well, there were three reasons why I decided to pick up this book:
I never physically read Alice in Wonderland before. I've watched the movies. I've heard the tales. But never read it. I thought it was about due time.
I wanted to see what the hype was about the cult classic. How did it become a legendary children's fable?
It was free on my Audible account, and I saw that Scarlett Johansson was doing the narration. That's what sold me on pressing play. I don't care what ya'll say about Scarlett Jo, but I like her!
As this book has made many adaptions over the decades, I don't know how it became the Beyonce of children's books. Granted, I can see this novel being very controversial in 1865 when Lewis Carroll first debuted it. A little girl falling down a rabbit hole into a world of talking animals, nonsensical conversations, questionable edibles that were encouraged, and a murderous Queen that likes to chop off people's heads? Oh, the delicious horror and gall! I know society had to be tripping out over this story. I mean, rumor has it that Carroll was high asf when he wrote it, so I guess that makes sense. But I'm not sure how it got to where it is now. I probably would have DNF this title if I weren't working while listening, so I stuck it out.
The conversations Alice had with the characters were so jostling. It was hard to concentrate on the backward capability meanings (if any) and the overall moral of the story. The story made no sense, and there was no plot. I will say Scarlett Johansson did a fantastic job narrating the whole piece. Who knew she could throw her voice and become a zany character in the snap of a finger?
Overall I'm giving it a rating of 3 stars. I've done it. I've read it... well listened to it, and I don't have to do it again. I'll watch every tv show and movie adaption Hollywood has to offer because it's looney enough. I will even play reimagined video games (Have yall ever heard of Alice in Madness?? OMG!), but I'm going to leave Carroll, Jefferson Airplanes, and the white rabbits alone.
