I received a digital and audio copy via Bramble and Macmillian Audio. All reviews are my own.
It's been a while since I stayed up past my bedtime to burn through a book. I felt like a little girl again during my Series of Unfortunate Events and the Harry Potter era. Danielle Allen has done it again with her follow-up to Curvy Girl Summer with Plus Size Player. By now, we all know I'm not much of a Romance Girly, but this book had me in all my feelings.
"Nina Ford doesn’t like to put all her eggs in one basket. She works multiple jobs, she enjoys multiple hobbies, she dates multiple men.
In her thirty years of life, Nina has never come across a man who has all the things she’s looking for.
She loves fun and excitement—and she has a man for that.
She loves confidence and humor—and she has a man for that.
She loves intelligence and ambition—and she has a man for that.
She loves passion and romance—and she has a man for that.
She’s always been content rotating a few men in and out of her life to get her needs met. But when an opportunity presents itself, Nina finds herself in a bit of a predicament. Because if everything she’s ever wanted in a partner collides with everything she’s ever wanted in a career, her eggs are bound to get cracked.
Like her back."
I decided to take this book via audio with Wesleigh Siobhan, reprising her role as Nina Ford. The listen took 12 hours and 54 minutes. As much as I love Siobhan's voice acting skills, and she bodied this book, I wish there could've been another narrator for this story. I'm not knocking her. We already got to experience her storytelling for Curvy Girl Summer, and it would've been nice to put a different voice behind a completely different character.
There were many elements I loved about this book. I love the unapologetic story regarding a confident woman in the dating scene. I love how it breaks down the work of an influencer. I love the organic chemistry between the characters. I love that it makes me think of wanting to find love again. Yes, this book makes me want to dust off my dating cobwebs and try to find my person out there.
Nina Ford is all about going with the flow. She sees who she wants to see, does things on her terms, and won't settle for anything less. Nina is the woman of my dreams when it comes to focusing on her goals while having fun doing it. While most would consider her dating tactics playeristic, she kept a healthy rotation of men around who satisfied all of her needs – that is, until she met that one. You know the one: the guy that has you kicking your feet in the air when ya'll are talking on the phone. The one who has you randomly smiling throughout the day. The one who you think about constantly while trying to focus on yourself. Yeah, that guy.
It seems Nina finds her perfect match and is about to give in to her happily ever after until she finds out she's dating the boss at her new job. From here, the readers watch a game of tug-of-war between wanting and trying to feign ignorance about the love that is blooming.
Overall, I rated this book 4-stars. Plus Size Player was too good of a read, and I had a great time losing sleep over it. I will add this with its sister to the Romance section of my shelves. And ya'll, it hasn't been announced yet, but there will be a Book 3 in the Curve series. I can't wait to delve into the story of the third friend, Jasmine, and the mystery man she's been seeing. The anticipation is killing me!
