Shelf Life: Journey to the Kingdom of No Return - Review

Updated: Mar 29, 2021

*I received this copy from the author. All thoughts are my own*

Annnd we're back for the second installment of Leslie R. Henderson's Shelf Life 2:Journey to the Kingdom of No Return!

"Good books don't come to an end—or do they? Desperate to extend his shelf life which has come to an end, child-like hero Little Book accepts a daring mission: rescue sci-fi action hero Luke Shelfwalker who has gone missing on the dark side. Now, the kid's desire to remain in the bookstore may be his ultimate undoing, for no one escapes this land which can turn deadly in the blink of an eye. But nothing will stop him from completing his assignment. Not even the enemy of books (a.k.a. the marauders) who rule the forbidden territory can stop him. With only hours 'til the bookstore reopens, Little Book will have to work fast, or he will be counted as yet another casualty of the merciless dark side."

We are back in the world of Little Book, and the Books'll Thrill Ya Bookstore inhabits. Everything is pretty much the same, though the second time around, this Toy Story-land feeling didn't hit as hard as the first book, Never Turn The Page Too Soon. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I don't know if it's introducing new characters or if it's just a classic case of the sequel slump.

In book 2, the story is not focused on Little Book as much as in Book 1. In this story, he shares the spotlight with Luke Shelfwalker, a Sci-fi hero. I wish we could've gotten to know Luke Shelfwalker some more. The start of his story sounded interesting. But between introducing him, the creepy crawlies of the dark side, and other minor characters, it just kind of fell flat for me. The wonder wasn't there anymore.

I rate the sequel 3-stars. I know it looks crazy that I gave the first book 5-stars, and now the series jumped down to a 3. But it is what it is. I believe a third book is on the way, but DO NOT QUOTE ME. For now, enjoy the Little Book adventures. Shelf Life: Journey to the Kingdom of No Return is available on Amazon now.
