Before the Hear Our Voices tour announcement, I had the privilege of exploring Cheryl Willis Hudson's When I Hear Spirituals. This book is a heartfelt celebration of the beauty and power of spirituals, depicted through stunning watercolor paintings. It beautifully narrates the joys and significance of these musical spirits across different historical periods and cultures, fostering a deep appreciation for our diverse cultural heritage. It's a testament to the richness and beauty of our shared human experience.
"Her heart pounds, she gets a lump in her throat, and tears flow down her cheeks. She wants to clap her hands and stomp her feet. There is healing, tenderness, strength, pride, and above all, hope.
The author of the classic picture book Bright Eyes, Brown Skin, Cheryl Willis Hudson, has woven together lyrics of twelve timeless, Black spirituals with a moving exploration of how music holds memories, emotions, and empowerment. Songs include “Go down, Moses,” “Nobody Knows the Troubles I See,” “Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child,” “Rock-a-My Soul,” “Get on Board, Little Children,” and more.
Evocative illustrations by award-winning artist London Ladd depict important people and places in Black history and culture: Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King, Jr., the Great Migration, and the Enslaved People’s Uprising of 1811."
While I may not consider myself a religious person, I, like many others, appreciate spiritual aesthetics. It was a refreshing experience to see the renowned 'negro spirituals' brought to light and be reminded of their enduring significance in the world of music. These songs, which can be linked to the Civil Rights Movement, slavery, and even modern-day tragedies, serve as a guide for navigating through dark times. I was particularly drawn to the captivating paintings by London Ladd, each one a perfect visual representation of the essence of the song it accompanies.
Overall, I have no rating. I usually don't rate children's books. I'm not going to be the person who gives a 5-star rating just because it's a book for kids. Nope, I won't fall for the setup! If you're looking for a story that incorporates religion, music, and something simple for children to engage with, check out When I Hear Spirituals.
